Who are we?

The Arabic Calligraphy Association of South Africa (ACASA) was established in 2018 as the country’s first formally constituted Arabic calligraphy association. Founded on a spirit of community, collaboration and artistic excellence, ACASA serves as a national platform dedicated to preserving, promoting and advancing the art of Arabic calligraphy throughout South Africa.

Our members include calligraphers, artists, students, educators and enthusiasts from across the country, united by a shared passion for the written word and its artistic traditions. Through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, community outreach and artist collaborations, ACASA creates opportunities for learning, skill-sharing and cultural exchange.

While Arabic calligraphy remains at the heart of our mission, we also promote the traditional Islamic book arts—including Tezhip, Ebru, Islamic geometry and Janubi Zakhrafa, South Africa’s expression of Islamic illumination.

ACASA also supports the ongoing research, development and promotion of Janubi Khatt, an evolving South African style of Arabic script inspired by the writings of the early Muslim community at the Cape. Through careful study, artistic practice and historical research, this long-term project seeks to document, refine and celebrate a distinctly South African contribution to the tradition of Arabic calligraphy.

By connecting artists, preserving heritage and nurturing future generations, ACASA continues to strengthen and grow South Africa’s vibrant Arabic calligraphy community.
